Argan oil comes from the nuts of the Argan tree. The latter are cracked by hand and the seed is extracted and ground in pasta oil. It is traditionally made by local Berber women who work in cooperatives.
The only region in the world where the Argan tree (Argania Spinosa) grows is the Arganeraie in the South West of Morocco. The nuts are cracked by hand so that the unique Argan oil is extracted. It is a true tradition, because it is Berber women in this region who have been engaged in producing this oil since time immemorial. Through fair trade, Arganolie offers Berber women a reliable source of income, a means to improve their financial independence and which opens their hands to better access to healthcare and education. Argan oil is also called Moroccan gold, because it works wonders for the skin, hair and nails. This trading is good for the residents.
The Argan tree (Argania Spinosa) can only be found in southwestern Morocco. That makes it one of the rarest trees in the world. The tree is a real go-getter and can live up to 150 to 200 years. The roots grow deep in the ground to be able to look for water. Because of those deep carrots, the soil stays well in heavy rain, which prevents erosion and therefore limits desertification.
Argan trees also play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance, as well as a good economic situation of the population. The tree does not need to be felled, it simply pays off so that the residents can continue to enjoy the tree. They can use and re-trade the fruits and the wood in different ways. In 1999, UNESCO added the Argan tree to the World Heritage List.
